Canvases & Recipes Deep Dive
Purpose: Master the infinite canvas workspace and use Recipes to build dashboards instantly. Audience: Power Users, Designers, Analysts
1. The Infinite Canvas
The Canvas is your creative workspace. Unlike traditional "dashboards" which are rigid grids, the Canvas is a free-form, infinite whiteboard where you can arrange data, media, and text.
Navigation & Controls
- Zoom: Use the Zoom Controls (bottom right) or scroll/pinch to zoom in and out.
- Pan: Click and drag on empty space to move around the canvas.
- Grid Snap: Objects snap to a grid for easy alignment. This is visible as a dot pattern when you are editing.
Working with Objects
- Multi-Select: Click and drag a box around multiple objects to select them all.
- Copy/Paste: Use standard keyboard shortcuts (
Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V) to duplicate objects, even across different canvases. - Grouping (Frames): Use Frames to group objects together. Frames act as "Slides" in Presentation Mode.
2. Object Types
You can add various objects to tell your data story:
Data Objects
- Insight: A chart or graph (Column, Line, Pie, etc.).
- KPI: A single "Hero Number" with comparison indicators.
- Worksheet: A raw data table or spreadsheet view.
- Sheetlet: A mini-spreadsheet for quick calculations.
Design Objects
- Text: Rich text editors for titles, annotations, and context.
- Media: Upload Images and Videos to brand your presentation.
- Shapes: A full vector shape library (Rectangles, Circles, Arrows, Chevrons, etc.) to build process diagrams or flowcharts.
- Prompts: Interactive filter controls that let viewers slice the data on the canvas (e.g., a "Region" dropdown).
3. Recipes: Instant Dashboards
Recipes are "Dashboard Templates" that build a complete workspace for you.
How It Works
Instead of building charts one by one, a Recipe generates a full set of Canvases, Insights, and Metrics tailored to a specific business function.
The Recipe Workflow
- Select Recipe: Choose from the library (e.g., "Sales Pipeline", "Marketing ROI").
- Connect Source: Select your data provider (e.g., Salesforce, HubSpot).
- Match Fields: The Recipe expects specific standard fields (like "Revenue" or "Deal Stage"). You will be asked to map your actual column names to these standard fields.
- Example: Map your column
amt_closedto the Recipe'sRevenuefield.
- Example: Map your column
- Launch: Scoop creates a New Workspace fully populated with the dashboards defined in the recipe.
4. Advanced Canvas Features
Process Diagrams
Use the Arrow and Shape tools to draw live process diagrams.
- Connectors: Arrows snap to the connection points of shapes and data objects.
- Flow: Visualize how data moves through your business logic (e.g., "Lead" -> "Opportunity" -> "Closed Won").
Presentation Mode
Any Frame you place on the canvas becomes a slide.
- Order: Frames are ordered by their position or index.
- Navigation: In Presentation Mode, use arrow keys to move between Frames.
- Interactivity: Insights and Prompts remain interactive even in Presentation Mode.
